Mississippi Employers Open to Fair Chance Hiring, See Opportunities to Expand Talent Pipeline
A study released by the Mississippi Business Alliance (MSBA) Foundation and Magnolia Correctional Industries (MAGCOR) finds that Mississippi employers are broadly open to hiring individuals with prior justice involvement, highlighting an opportunity to strengthen the state’s workforce.
The Fair Chance Hiring Study surveyed hiring decision-makers across Mississippi to assess employer attitudes, practices and barriers related to hiring formerly incarcerated individuals.
The study found that a majority of employers are willing to consider these candidates, with many citing a belief that “people deserve a second chance.” Among businesses that have hired from this talent pool, nearly 9 in 10 reported positive outcomes.
“Mississippi’s workforce challenges require us to expand and better align our talent pipeline,” said Scott Waller, President of the MSBA Foundation. “This research shows that employers are willing, outcomes are strong, and with the right approach,, fair chance hiring connects more Mississippians to meaningful work while strengthening our economy.”

MAGCOR Receives Donated Range to Strengthen Workforce Training Programs
MAGCOR Industries has received a donated freestanding range from Viking Range, LLC, helping strengthen workforce training opportunities for incarcerated individuals participating in MAGCOR programming. The donation was made possible through the support of Senator Chassaniol, who recognized the need for updated equipment in MAGCOR’s training facility and connected the organization with Viking Range, LLC of Greenwood, Mississippi.
MAGCOR offers a variety of workforce development programs designed to prepare incarcerated individuals for success after release. Through training opportunities that include industry recognized certifications such as ServSafe, AHLEI Certified Hospitality Manager and the other customer service programs, participants gain practical skills that support employment, stability and long-term growth.

For Wade, a MAGCOR Work Release participant working for the City of Pearl, the organization was instrumental in his obtaining work experience while incarcerated. The City of Pearl has offered Wade a position to stay on with them full-time upon his release in July.
“I can actually see myself never going back to prison. I can see a future and a life where I do not come back,” said Wade, who was sentenced for a DUI wreck.
Wade credits MAGCOR with understanding he is a tactile person, with a background in mechanics, HVAC, and electrical work. He continues to learn hands-on at his new job.

MAGCOR Hosts Free Healthcare Screenings for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals
MAGCOR Industries will host a free Health and Wellness Screening event with Plan A Health on Monday, April 27, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at MAGCOR Industries, located at 663 N. State Street in Jackson. The event is designed to connect formerly incarcerated individuals with important health services and wellness resources while touching base with MAGCOR to see what services they may qualify for, to support long term stability and continued success in reentry.
Available services will include blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, family planning resources, mammogram referrals, HIV testing, Pap smears and STD testing. The event is free to attend and aims to remove barriers to care by making basic health services more accessible in a welcoming community setting.
“At MAGCOR, we know successful reentry requires more than employment support alone,” said Martha Claire Bullen, Chief Reentry Officer. “It also requires access to the basic services that help people build stable, healthy lives. This event is about meeting people where they are and helping connect them to care, resources, and support.”

'She was a godsend': Former Inmate recounts how MAGCOR mentor changed his life
Patrick Medina works for the city of Pearl as a mechanic, where he was recently recognized as employee of the month. He has even started his own side business, where he works on small engines and lawnmowers. Medina’s path to success was not simple, though. In fact, it was rife with obstacles — the main one being spending 20 years of his life in prison.
Medina started experimenting with meth at age 13 and later found himself in and out of jail on nonviolent drug charges, depending on family members to provide for him while he was locked up.
Beyond the opportunity was compassion provided by King, who Medina admitted refused to let him fail. Her persistence in keeping in him in check instilled a mindset change in Medina, one that made him realize that he could live a prosperous life outside of prison. And more importantly, he was convinced that he would never end up back behind bars.
