TESTIMONIAL
My name is Anita Craft, I am 60 years old, a widow, a mother of 30 year old twins, and a proud grandmother of three beautiful grandchildren, ages 8, 4, and 2. I am also the caregiver for my 89 year old mother. My family means everything to me. I struggled with addition in my early twenties. For years, I told myself I was a "functioning addict," but in reality, I was a very lost person who did not know how to cope with life on life's terms. After the loss of my father, a painful divorce, and eventually losing custody of my children, I lost myself completely to addiction and untreated mental illness. My addiction damaged my relationships, my marriages, and ultimately cost me my freedom.
Today, I use my lived experience to help individuals who are reentering society after incarceration. I walk alongside people who are facing the same fear, uncertainty, and challenges I once faced.
In my role, I assist individuals in securing vital records, housing, clothing, food assistance, job training, employment, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and transportation. I have the privilege of sharing both my struggles and my successes to show others change is possible. Today, I no longer define myself by my addition or my incarceration. I define myself by my perseverance, my faith, my family, and my commitment to helping others rebuild their lives. My past does not determine my future. Instead, it has helped prepare me to serve with compassion, understanding, and purpose. I am proof rehabilitation works. I am proof that people can change and I am committed to living the rest of my life in service, gratitude, and recovery.
